As variáveis mensuradas, tanto

ABSTRACT - The presence of thorns on the canes and leaves of blackberry plants hinders cultural management such as pruning and harvesting. The development of
thornless cultivars has been one of the main objectives of blackberry breeding programsall over the world. The objective of this work was to test if there is a
correlation between the density and size of thorns of the parents with the frequency of thornless individuals in their progenies. In addition, comparisons between thorn
number and size in the selections as well as correlations between these characters were performed. The work was carried out at Embrapa Clima Temperado, Pelotas,
RS, on the years 2016 and 2017. Twelve progenies originated through self pollination of selections Black 132, Black 141, Black 183, Black 190, Black 219, Black 229,
Black 230, Black 241, Black 274, Black 275, Seleção 21/96 and Seleção 22/96 were used. Flowers of these selections were bagged at balloon stage selection, to avoid
cross-pollination. The fruits of each selection were collected and the extracted seeds were scarified in sulfuric acid and packed in plastic bags with filter paper soaked in
fungicide solution. The bags were placed in a cold chamber (4±1°C) until the emission of the roots was observed. After this period, the seeds were transferred to
germination boxes. When their cotyledons were fully visible, the presence or absence of glandular hairs on their boders was observed under a stereo microscope. The
thorn´s density and size were also analyzed in five clones of each selection used as parents, and the data were submitted to variance analysis and Scott-Knott's test. The evaluated were submitted to Pearson's linear correlation test. The density and size of thorns of the parents are not correlated with the frequency of thornless individuals in their progeny. There is wide variability as to the number and size of thorns, among selections used as parents, in this work. The number, height, length and width of spines between the primary and secondary canes are highly correlated, and there is no need to evaluate separately the two types of shoots. ABSTRACT.- Pecan scab caused by Venturia effusa is the main crop disease affecting leaves and fruits, resulting in defoliation and yield and fruit quality losses. Recently, pecan groves expanded into Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina, where the temperate-humid climate is conducive for scab development. Chemical control is difficult given the height of adult trees which exceeds 20 m. Therefore, the strategy consists on selecting tolerant cultivars accompanied by cultural management aimed at providing a good ventilation and light interception. The objective of this work was to assess the susceptibility of pecan cultivars to Venturia effusa in the Uruguayan agroclimatic conditions. Disease severity index (DSI) in fruits and leaves were determined in 18 cultivars throughout four consecutive seasons. Most of the cultivars evaluated were classified as resistant with fruit disease severity index (DSIF) below 2.0, being Elliott and Sumner the most resistant ones (DSIF < 1.5) while Mahan was susceptible (DSIF > 3.0) and Apache and Wichita were very susceptible (DSIF > 4.5). © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group |
